Suya wins US film award

She might have been thinking that going to the United States of America will just fulfil her dream, but Malawi’s female actress Flora Suya got more than that.

Her movie, My Mother’s Story, is one of those that have been awarded at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival in California.

Suya’s presence at the festival looked impossible until Lilongwe City Central member of Parliament (MP) David Bisnowaty (Independent) bought her a return air ticket.

On Tuesday, the film was among those recognised in the Special Recognition Awards, winning in the Achievement in Narrative Feature Film category.

My Mother’s Story was awarded together with 14:32, a Ghanaian production by Kwesi Apenteng Mensah, according to information on the festival’s website.

An excited Suya wrote on her Facebook page: “I can’t keep calm, koma Mulungu. My Mother’s Story crew and cast, spouses and all people who love what I do, I love you guys.”

She said in an interview later the award was not about her, but Malawi as a whole.

Said Suya: “This award means a lot. It is a breakthrough to the international world of movies. It gives me energy to do more in my next productions as an actress, script writer and director. It proves that I can do more than My Mother’s Story.”

She thanked Bisnowaty for making her presence at the awards possible, saying the gesture enabled her share experiences with some great actors and directors.

My Mother’s Story chronicles the life of a young woman, Tadala,  impregnated by a garden boy who abandons her. Another man falls in love with her despite being pregnant and changes her life until tragedy strikes as he dies suddenly.

Premièred in May, the 90-minute movie features Suya performing as Tadala. The cast includes Tapiwa Gwaza, Jeremiah Mwaungulu, Andrew Msanyama, Mirriam Mwadzimva and Memory Mzingwa. n
