Swimmer Gomes breaks another record

Filipe Gomes yesterday broke another national swimming record in four days at the on-going Fina World Championships in Budapest, Hungary after crossing the 200 metres breaststroke finish line in 2:28.94 minutes.

Although he settled for the last-but-one slot in the 40-contestant category and number two in his heat, the swimmer managed to beat by at least 12 seconds the country’s record (2:40.09 minutes) that Rory Buck set in 2005.

Has broken Malawi’s second record: Gomes

Gomes first broke the country’s 12-year record on Sunday when he swam a 100-metres breaststroke stretch in 1:07.37 minutes, almost a second better than what Rory registered in 2005.

“It is a good achievement for both Gomes and the country. It is not easy to improve records at such a prestigious competition,” said Team Malawi leader Monica Chang’anamuno.

The going proved tough for female swimmer Tayamika Chang’anamuno in women’s 100-metres freestyle. She finished 10th in her heat and 75 overall out of 78 contestants. She swam in 1:10.84 minutes.

On Tuesday, she managed to improve her finish time by at least a second in 50-metres backstroke. Her time was 37.87 seconds.

Another female swimmer Ammara Pinto will compete in 50-metre freestyle tomorrow. A few days ago, she finished last in 100-metres backstroke heat on 1:20.95.
