Malawian/Swedish music group The Very Best, who are currently on a South African tour with top British band Mumford & Sons, say they are overwhelmed by the response from the South African public.

Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya and Swedish producer Johan Hugo, better known as The Very Best, have toured the world, but this is their first tour of South Africa.

Last weekend, The Very Best embarked on a South African tour with Mumford & Sons.

They were joined by Senegalese legend and The Very Best collaborator Baaba Maal.

The shows kicked off on January 29 at the Grand Palace in Cape Town.

They played two more shows at the Grand Palace on January 30 and 31 before they played at Botanic Gardens in Durban yesterday.

All the shows were sold out.

“I think these might be our best tour ever. South Africa has been amazing. From our first show, which was a headline show at The Assembly in Cape Town, to the shows with Mumford & Sons, Baaba Maal and Beatenburg, it has been a very warm welcome,” Hugo said in an e-mail interview from South Africa.

He added: “We have been joining Mumford & Sons on stage with Baaba Maal performing a new song together. It has been more of a collaboration, which is really nice.”

On Monday, There Will Be Time, a new Mumford & Sons and Baaba Maal single that Hugo produced went to number one on the official South Africa charts.

“So, we’re celebrating that too. We have three shows left and some recordings to do. Durban tomorrow and Pretoria this weekend,” he said.
