Three people including a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier have died near Mtengowanthenga Trading Centre in Dowa and 11 others injured when a vehicle they were travelling in overturned after its rear tire burst.

According to Mponera Police Spokesperson Kondwani Kandiado the accident happened at around 5 am on Wednesday.

Kandiado identified the soldier  as  41-year old Alick Malungo Kampini from Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe while the two others are Suzana Enock Sanga and Tasiyana Namigabe whose full details were not immediately available .

Explained Kandiado: “The minibus, registration number KA 8089, Nissan caravan was being driven by Dailas Kishombe aged 28, it was coming from Karonga going towards Lilongwe with almost 14 passengers on board.

When it reached at Chakalamba village along the M1 road, its right rear tyre burst and due to over speeding the minibus overturned three times.  The three passengers died on the spot after sustaining deep cuts.”

Kandiado further said five of the injured were rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe after sustaining serious injuries while six others have been admitted to Mtengowanthenga Mission Hospital.

He urged all drivers to avoid over speeding to avoid similar accidents.

“Speed thrills but it kills and as police, now that we are approaching the festive season, we have intensified traffic checks and whoever will be found contravening traffic rules and regulations, will be dealt with accordingly,” he warned.
