Three drown in well in Mzimba

Three people have died at Jenda in Mzimba after drowning in a well.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya yesterday confirmed the death of Suzgo Nyirenda,  25, and Saulos Nyirenda, 18, of Suwe Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mzikubola and Weston Chibwe,  40, of Mandauka Village, T/A Mponela in Dowa.

He said in an interview on Wednesday that Saulos went into the 2o-metre-deep well to recover his mother’s national identity card which she accidentally dropped. Kalaya said when Saulosi failed to come out, his brother Suzgo went in to rescue him, but failed to do anything.

Chibwe went in to attempt to rescue the two, according to Kalaya. He said all three died inside the well.

Later, the police and some community members retrieved the bodies from the well.

A post-mortem established that death was due to suffocation.

The police have since asked people in the area to cover wells.

“It is unfortunate that we lost the three lives at once under such circumstances. We are appealing to the public to avoid going into wells. The wells should also be covered all the time to avoid such accidents,” said Kalaya.n
