ThyoloThava MP sends SOS for constituents

ThyoloThava members of Parliament (MP) Mary Thom Navicha has appealed to government and other organisations to focus in other districts with assistance equally affected by floods.

Navicha said in an interview on Friday she was concerned that much attention was being given to the Shire Valley districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.

She said there are affected districts that are being overlooked, citing her own Thyolo, where she claimed in her constituency alone, 4 000 houses have been damaged by floods.

The MP said over 20 000 people have been rendered homeless and were in need of shelter, clothing and food.

Navicha said: “Thyolo borders with Chikwawa and the problems that are in Chikwawa in fact emanated from some rivers from Thyolo. We appeal that the focus should not only be in Lower Shire.

“With help from World Vision Malawi that provided 100 bags of maize, 20 bags of beans and plastic sheets, and something from my pocket, we have tried to address the problem, but it’s not enough.”

The MP said to avoid camps where the victims could be exposed to more problems, there is an arrangement where seven to 15 people are being kept by those that have their houses intact.

She said there were others that have sought shelter at a church, adding that houses were still falling and the number of victims increasing.

Floods have elsewhere in the country claimed 176 lives, injured many and destroyed property.

President Peter Mutharika declared Malawi a State of Disaster and called for international and local assistance.
