The Takulandirani Malawi International Tourism Exposition, set to be held in Lilongwe from August 30 to September 1, is budgeted to cost K75 million, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism has announced.

Briefing journalists in Lilongwe yesterday, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Henry Mussa said hosting the expo on home soil was a cost-effective way of promoting the country as a tourism destination, apart from participating in international fairs hosted by other countries.

He said: “The decision to host this expo was timely as it resonates with governments’ decision to accord tourism priority status in the MGDS [Malawi Growth and Development Strategy] and also include tourism as a key economic driver for socio-economic development.”

In his remarks, the ministry’s director of tourism Isaac Katopola urged the media to actively participate in the expo and collaboratively promote Malawi as a tourism product.

The tourism expo will run for three days, with the first two days reserved for business-to-business meetings and will be opened to the public on the third day.

Interested individuals are advised to register on the expo portal at www.tourism.mw.

Currently, over 60 tourism pavilions out of 82 have been taken up by exhibitors, representing 73 percent of expo confirmation. Besides, there are 33 international buyers and media organizations from the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, The Netherlands, China and South Africa who have confirmed participation at the fair.
