The camping Malawi Under 20 soccer team has been trimmed from 32 to 27 players ahead of the April 26 CAF Youth Championships Preliminary second leg away match against Botswana’s Young Zebras.

This comes after the Junior Flames yesterday put up a gallant fight to beat Mighty Wanderers 2-0 during a training encounter at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) technical director John Kaputa confirmed dropping five players yesterday.

He said the squad will be reduced further to 25 players today.

“We noted that the squad was just too big for easy monitoring. We need to have a squad of 25 players before our trip to Gaborone in Botswana for our second leg match. Therefore, we will drop two more players today,” Kaputa said.

Kaputa referred The Nation to U-20 national team head coach Ernest Mtawali on the names of the chopped players.

However, Mtawali said such details will be made public during a press briefing at the Sports Council tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the U-20 squad has been beefed up with two more TNM Super League stars Dalitso Sailesi of Big Bullets and Wanangwa Kaonga of Silver Strikers, who inspired the team to the impressive triumph over the Nomads.
