United Democratic Front (UDF) secretary general Kandi Padambo said yesterday while the party’s convention set for August 1 and 2 will decide on its torchbearer in the 2019 elections, the party has endorsed incumbent Atupele Muluzi.

Padambo’s sentiments come against the background of a declaration by Balaka North legislator Lucius Banda to challenge Muluzi at the convention.

Muluzi: I am ready to deliver

Speaking at a rally Muluzi addressed in Blantyre’s Bangwe Township, Padambo said the party has placed its trust in Muluzi.

He said: “The convention will decide the torch bearer, but we are certain that Atupele will lead us and that is why we have decided to endorse him as our desirable candidate.”

Padambo’s sentiments were echoed by UDF Southern Region governor MacDonald Symon who said the party has maintained its structures since the advent of multiparty democracy and remained strong.

He said: “We have agreed that our candidate will be Atupele. We have confidence in him and we believe that he will deliver with his experience working in government in numerous [Cabinet] portfolios.”

On his part, Muluzi said he was ready to deliver and make change as Malawi needs youthful leadership that must propel the country to growth.
