Organisers of the Urban Music Party (UMP) Nde’feyo Entertainment say they will hold a fashion show as part of this year’s event.

Nde’feyo co-manager Ken ‘Zizwa’ Limwame says inclusion of a fashion event seeks to hype up the country’s fashion industry.

He said: “The fashion event is to promote and provide a platform for the local fashion industry, especially those with an urban flavour. This is in keeping with government’s strategy of Buy Malawian.

“We have graduated from a mini-fashion show at BAT last year to something bigger and better. Last year, it garnered a lot of interest and this year we decided to have a separate fashion event.”

The event, which is happening for the first time in the history of the UMP, has been dubbed Underground Fashion Night.

It will take place on the sidelines of the main event which includes music performances and presentation of awards.

Nzika and Vivietta fashion houses have been billed to headline the fashion event and will be joined by other designers such as Alinafe, Tavari, Chris Ngalu and Nyalisa Wear.

“UMP is about promoting and celebrating Malawi’s urban music, arts, fashion and culture and, as related industries grow, UMP will be another big platform to celebrate and promote our fashion culture and products, particularly those that are urban-oriented,” added Limamwe.

Meanwhile, for the second time, UMP Festival will award media practitioners that have excelled in promoting Malawi’s urban music, arts, fashion and culture.

Limamwe said there are five categories for the media awards, namely best online journalist, best print journalist, best radio DJ, best club DJ and best TV music presenter.

Winners will be voted for by artists who are required to send their vote by electronic mail (e-mail) at ump.festival@gmail.com.

Previous winners include Clifton Kawanga of Times Group, James Gumbwa of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Radio 2FM and Kimpho Loka, founder of Nyasa Showbiz online publication. n
