UN for sustainable projects
Communities implementing donor-funded projects in the country have been encouraged to factor in sustainability components when planning their activities.
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) deputy representative in Malawi Dorothy Nyasulu said this on Friday when she closed a two-day planning workshop for the Joint Programme on Girls Education (JPGE) being implemented in Mangochi, Salima and Dedza districts.
The deputy representative said most projects in the country have failed to progress once organisations complete their operations due to failure by implementing groups to plan for the future.
“We have seen projects failing to proceed once the lifespan of donor assistance is over. This happens simply because we do not factor in sustainability elements in whatever we do,” she observed, adding that it is high time Malawians realised the need for proper planning.
She pointed out that apart from sustainability, they should also remain accountable for whatever they are doing to win the confidence of donor organisations who she said support communities that are accountable and transparent in their activities.
Nyasulu also implored Malawians to take the leadership role in whatever they are doing rather than letting themselves to be led all the time, saying leadership is critical for the success of any programme.
The JPGE is winding up the first phase of the programme and the second is scheduled to start in June this year. n
