With just days remaining before 2013 becomes history, many artists are taking stock of what they have achieved this year.

While others it was not one of those grey days, for some, 2013 has been their best year.

One of such artists is fashion designer Neema Charles Gadi, who has made waves this year on the fashion industry.

She has showcased at two of the biggest events in the fashion industry. She started with inaugural Malawi Fashion Week in June and later dressed models who participated in the Malawi News Model of the Year.

“I have had so much fun this year. I had a good share of what it feels to be on the ramp. The year has already ended so I am looking forward to 2014,” Neema told Chill.

Inspired by Girgio Armani’s all-rounding skills, the 24-year-old designer launched her label last year.

“I held a fashion show on my label Charma89 launch last year October in Blantyre and had another show in Lilongwe in December. That was the genesis of my professional career as a fashion designer.

“I started designing when I was really young; I don’t remember when exactly but it should be around when I was 12 years old. I started with primping my own clothes then graduated to making my own clothes before doing some for people close to me. But when it comes to designing and making clothes for people, it has been four yours,” she said.

One of the astounding features of her designs is the ability to use anything and turn it into one nice outfit.

“I design both men and ladies clothes and a bit of interior decor. I use anything that is there, be it metal, rubber bands, money clips or cigarettes. I love to recycle and I love to be creative with things around me. Give me anything, I can turn it into a wonderful design that will send eye popping and tongues wagging,” she challenges.

While she is making her fashion designing plans for 2014, she will also concentrate on her education.

“I have done a lot this year and got couple of things need to concentrate on next year. But that does not meant that I will stop designing, I will come with new ideas. So people should be on the lookout,” she said.

Neema said the Malawi designing industry is growing and in two to three year, it will be full of good designers.

“Many designers are coming out now and it is good for the industry that continues to grow. My word to those wishing on taking this road, if they really know what they want all they have to do is stick to it and believe,” she said.
