US caucus honours APM

America’s Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) has honoured President Peter Mutharika for his “distinctive” political career which, among other things, has seen him including members of the opposition in the running of his administration.

The honour follows another award by African Leadership Magazine which last week conferred on Mutharikathe African Leadership Award and Medal of Honour in recognition of his outstanding posturing as one of the continent’s thought leaders.

According to a statement from State House Press Office, Georgia Legislative Black Caucus chairperson, Dorothea Dawkins-Haigler on Thursday presented the certificate of the resolution to President Mutharika at the St Ragis Hotel in New York, United States of America (USA) where he is attending the 71st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“According to the certificate of the resolution, members of the Legislative Black Caucus of the Georgia General Assembly resolved to salute President Mutharika’s leadership for, among other things, including a candidate he  defeated in an election; Atupele Muluzi [Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development], in his own Cabinet.

“While recognising the contributions of Arthur Peter Mutharika at the international Forum on African Leadership, the honour also pays homage to President Mutharika’s illustrious academic and political careers,” reads part of the statement.

Mutharika, writing on his Facebook page on Saturday, said the awards conferred upon him should remind fellow Malawians that despite the current situation they are passing through, the global community has hope in their plan towards inclusive development as it is a workable plan.

“Among qualifications to this award is my approach to political matters where I propagate inclusivity by roping in those that were my opponents during the 2014 polls,” reads the post in part. n
