The United States Agency for International Development (USaid) has said it will continue providing technical and financial support to the Government of Malawi on the teaching of reading skills.

schoolChristine Djondo, USaid Malawi education office director said this on Thursday at Namilango Primary School in Blantyre after awarding four schools from Mzimba, Chikhwawa, Mangochi and the host with a certificate, a tablet and $1 250 (about K400 000) each under the Karen Wiener Memorial Fund.

Djondo said Wiener’s passion to help in the implementation of the Malawi reading agenda led her to originate the Timawerenga activity.

Speaking at the function, Principal Secretary for basic education in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Anjimile Mtila Oponyo said Timawerenga project complements government’s priorities to improve learning outcomes.

Wiener, 33, was an American citizen who was found dead in a hotel room in Blantyre on November 21 2012 when she was on duty as an inspectorate director for an illiteracy education in primary school project.
