Venture into solar energy—Ricotech

Managing director for Ricotech (formerly Gestetner) Faizal Okhai says venturing into solar energy is ideal as the country continues to face lapses in the energy sector that is posing a negative effect.

Okhai made the remarks last week in Blantyre following an agreement that has been made between Ricotech and Solsquare Energy Limited which is aiming at addressing numerous energy challenges in many of the country’s sectors.

He observed that the power outages in the country are posing a big challenge, and that there was need for a department to address such challenges.

Okhai: Energy woes posing a big challenge

Okhai said: “The power situation in the country is precarious and that motivated us to unveil the agreement to deal with the power problems that are affecting the country.”

He further said that together with the company (Solsquare), they are geared to help provide lights to interested individuals and firms with the enhanced solar equipment with a lifespan of 10 and 25 years.

In recent years, government has been giving Malawians year-around hopes to put an end to persistent power outages that have stifled the pace of economic development. However, with 95 percent reliance on hydro-electric power, Malawians will have to brace for electricity deficit in the next five years unless the country receives normal to above normal rains during the period, according to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom).

Both Escom and Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) attribute the reduced generation to low water levels in Lake Malawi and its sole outlet, Shire River.

In his remarks, managing director for Solsquare, Leornhard Eins, said that it is better to be part of the solution in any problems hence they are highly motivated to address the energy challenges that the country is facing. n
