The Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wabm) general assembly held last weekend in Lilongwe announced constitutional changes to be effected immediately.

In an interview with The Nation yesterday, Wbam president Richard Kuwali said from now on each member of the association, including athletes, will be required to pay an annual fee.

Members of the executive committee will pay K24 000 (about $48); regional representatives will pay K6 000 ($12) whereas athletes (bodybuilders and weightlifters) will each pay K2 400 (about $4).

“During the year we have been talking about how we can sustain ourselves as an association and we reached a decision to introduce membership fee. The newly elected members just adopted the decision,” said Kuwali.

The new committee has also incorporated in the executive committee Stella Kamanga, a bodybuilder from Mzuzu, to champion the cause of women bodybuilders.

“We want more female bodybuilders and weightlifters and we think the presence of Stella [Kamanga] in the committee will give the association a female face,” said Kuwali.
