When water becomes a problem

Listen to this article

Most household chores require use of water. While water is the basic necessity for a hygienic domestic environment, improper management of this life-sustaining resource may lead to untidy surroundings.

This is a big problem in cases of poor plumbing and imperfect drainage systems.

In our project this week, we take a look at the commonest drainage problems and provide solutions using our own hands.

Levels of unmanaged water may vary. There are instances where the water can be used in irrigating plants whereas in some cases it must be gotten rid of completely. This may be the case where the water in question may contain chemicals that do not support plant life. In some cases the quantities may cause water logging on the lawns, taking away the beauty in the process.

Hygiene problems caused by improper excess water management around the home are easy to solve with inexpensive domestic tools.

Before we identify tools required for this project, you are supposed to identify the cause for non-movement of the water in your yard. In some cases, water problems are caused by landscaping that does not allow free flow of water. The areas that hold water, apart from being an eyesore, create breeding areas for mosquitoes.

In this project, you require a hoe, a rake, a shovel and a wheelbarrow. After identifying the problems, you need to solve them.

First, create a slope, ensuring that the direction you want the water to take is the lowest. You can plant grass to reduce erosion at the same time ensuring that the water seeps into the ground.

In the event that there are large volumes of water involved, you need to construct a drain. Ensure that the drain is going along the slope. You can connect this to a public drain. You can as well direct your drain to an area where you have plants that absorb a lot of water such as banana, blue gum trees or sugarcanes.

Alternatively, you can create a mini soak-away by digging a sizeable pit and filling it with stones.

It is my hope that you will comfortably use your water without fearing that your hygienic effort will hit back in an unhygienic manner.
