Heavy rains and strong winds last week blew-off some iron sheets at Ntaja Malawi Savings Bank Agency in Machinga rendering it unable.

The bank remained closed from Wednesday up until Sunday, February 21.

Speaking in an interview, a customer Cathy Phiri, said she had come to withdraw money for transport to visit her parents but failed.

“I came to withdraw some money to visit my parents and relatives in Phalombe who are starving, only to find out that there was a poster at the bank’s premises informing customers about the immediate temporary closure,” she said.

Phiri said she had no option but to return home to Chikweo pending the opening day.

Another customer claimed the bank’s floor was flooded with water as a result of persistent rains and the blown-off the roof.

Customers were welcomed by security guards who said heavy storms had damaged many electrical appliances including air conditioners.

“If you want to transact, go to Liwonde-MSB,” said one guard.

An operations clerk at the bank, who did not want to be mentioned said the bank was closed due to heavy damage to electrical cables resulting in the malfunctioning of computers. He, however, assured customers that the bank is working round the clock to normalise the situation. n
