Top Sports have announced that the second edition of the Zambezi Challenge Cup is slated for the weekend of February 21-23.
Top Sports operations director Kelvin Moyo said the tournament will be held in Lilongwe and will come back bigger and better.
“We had a preliminary meeting with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) who have advised us to plan around those dates and they will give us a licence subject to meeting some outstanding issues,” said Moyo.
He said Lilongwe-based Bull’s Eye have been sub-contracted to manage the tournament while EE Traders, an accounting firm, will handle the financial aspects.
Moyo also said just like last year, the tournament will be spiced up by a foreign team yet to be identified.
“Currently, we have four [foreign] options, including defending champions Caps United from which we shall choose one team,” said Moyo.
He also said they are considering increasing the number of participating teams from four to six.
“Big Bullets, Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers’ participation will be automatic. Bullets will take part by virtue of being Super League champions, Silver will take part by virtue of winning the Standard Bank Cup while Wanderers for being last year’s losing finalists.
“However, we are yet to engage the clubs to agree on the modalities,” he said.
Moyo said in determining the two other slots, Top Sports will consider regional league champions and the outstanding team from the Northern Region’s is Moyale Barracks.
He said other modalities of the tournament will be announced in due course.n
