Zomba-based Zamzam Foundation is distributing Iftar hampers to the disadvantaged fasting Muslims in this month of Ramadan that began on June 18.

Speaking when distributing the same on Friday at Lupanga Mosque in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nsamala in Balaka, the foundation’s executive director EzeldinAbdalla, said they felt duty-bound to give the food items to underprivileged Muslims who have nothing to eat when they break their fasting.

Among other items, the hampers contained rice, dates fruits, sugar, salt, candles and matches.

Abdalla said when believers share possessions, there is equality and people are willing to pray since they are healthy.

“Ramadan cannot be complete if people lack food to eat after breaking the fasting; hence, we resolved to give these Iftar hampers to this district’s mosques to energise them in preparation for the other day’s prayers as we are all fasting to the same God,” he said.

Parliamentarian for the area, Patricia ShanilDzimbiri, commended Zamzam Foundation for the timely intervention of the Iftar.

“The majority of these Muslims are those that were affected by floods earlier this year and are struggling to recover from the floods. These food items will encourage them to pray wholeheartedly for the transformation of their families, communities as well as the whole country,” she said.

The foundation has also given Iftar to inmates at Zomba Prison as well as several mosques in Blantyre, Mangochi and Machinga.
