The Herald newspaper of Zimbabwe reported yesterday that the Gems defeated Tanzania 37-28 at Bona Court in Gaborone to win the championship of the watered-down competition that only pooled five countries, including Swaziland and Zambia.

During the final, Zimbabwe led 11-8, 19-14 and 30-18 before wrapping up their first continental netball crown that could go a long way in improving their ranking.

Malawi and Uganda withdrew due to lack of funding whereas defending champions South Africa undermined the competition by opting to play test matches in England.

To make the final, Zimbabwe beat Swaziland 49-35, drew 47-47 with Botswana then defeated Zambia 51-49.

All the teams that were present in Botswana have never beaten the Queens; hence, Malawi could have certainly seized the championship.
