The exercise was part of Lions Club International centenary celebrations whose main event is being held in Mangochi from today up to Sunday.

“There is need for everybody to have eyes tested to know their condition. In addition, we have the elderly people in our communities who have difficulties in reading either the holy scriptures or any other document. I commend the Lions Club of Zomba for holding this free eye screening exercise,” Maunde said.

In his remarks, ZCH head of Eye Department, Desire Suleni Munthali, said most of the people who go to the facility are diagnosed with cataracts.

“Those who come to this place looking for tertiary health services are mostly from the urban areas. In the case of Eastern Region districts, we receive patients with trachoma.

“Luckily, we have trained health surveillance assistants in most health centres who can assistpeople at primary healthcare level,” he said. n
