Zomba Police Station has emerged the best performing station in the Eastern Region in terms of community policing in 2016, beating three other stations in the region, namely Mangochi, Machinga and Balaka.

Zomba Police Station spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano said in an interview the station has won the award because of the good relationship it has with members of the community in combating crimes, a development she said has led to arrests of many notorious criminals and recovery of stolen items.

She said: “Secondly, through our community policing office, we have sensitised the community to refrain from evil malpractices which can lead them to commit crimes.

“Apart from that, in 2016 there was also no case to do with the killing, abduction or exhumation of people with albinism compared to the previous year when several cases were registered.”

Sipiliano said the station, through its school outreach programme in different schools, has managed to keep youths in school.

“During Christmas and New Year season, we also registered zero crime and zero traffic offence. We attribute this to production of brochures distributed to members of the community. The brochures contained road safety and crime prevention tips,” she said.

In her remarks, Eastern Region Police Commissioner Effie Kaitano commended the station for the good work and encouraged them to continue working hard.

She also urged the other stations to work hard to get the award next time.
