Zomba re-elects deputy mayor

Zomba City Council (ZCC) yesterday re-elected councillor Davie Maunde as deputy mayor.

Maunde, who is councillor for Chinamwali Ward (United Democratic Front-UDF), defeated Chilunga Ward councillor Chikhulupiriro Jimu, who contested on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, with seven votes to four.

In his acceptance speech, Maunde said the victory will enable him, accomplish some of the projects introduced during his first term of office.

He cited the construction of the old capital’s stadium, upgrading of roads as well as improving hygiene as some of his priorities.

“The honeymoon is over and it is now time to deliver the developments the residents of the city have been waiting for,” he said.

ZCC chief executive officer Dyson Jangiya urged Maunde to discharge his duties with determination.

“The secretariat is committed to complement council’s decisions for the benefit of the residents of the city,” he said.

Zomba City Central member of Parliament Patricia Kainga (Peoples Party) congratulated Maunde on retaining the seat and called on him to faithfully follow up the unfinished developments.

“We are going to work hand in hand to transform the city,” she said. n
