Zomba youth cut women rights film

Youthful actors from Zomba have produced a movie, Mwapindulanji, to be launched in May.

Members of the self-sponsored group from 4 Miles in Malawi’s old capital, Maxwell Mponya and Lyson Rashid, told On the Arts on Friday that the DVD tackles issues of property grabbing which are common and topical in Malawi.

“We would like to portray the sad reality, especially on the inhumane act by some people in our society. If people watch this movie, we believe they will stop perpetrating the vice,” said Mponya.

According to Rashid, the 87-minute movie depicts Mwikhale (played by Benedicto Luka) who confiscates property from a widow following the death of his brother.

“Mwikhale met strong resistance from his in-law on first attempt, but succeeded to commit his heinous crime on the second. In fact, he resorted to witchcraft to get his ends,” said Rashid.

The vernacular feature has been edited by Maduza Studios.

“We will produce 1 000 copies to meet the demand for this truly Malawian real life movie,” Rashid explained.

They called on well-wishers and non-governmental organisations involved in women’s rights to support the production for change’s sake.
