‘Malawi can spring surprise in Algeria’

Injured Flames defender James Sangala believes all is not lost going into this Wednesday’s reverse 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B qualifier in Algeria.

While hope is lost among many Malawi fans after the 2-0 home loss against the Desert Foxes at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Sangala thinks otherwise. Malawi left on Sunday for Algeria.

“At least, now we know how Algeria plays, so it will be a completely different performance from us in Algeria. We did not know much about them. Our away form is bad, but records are there to be broken. We have lost our home record and we can also break our losing away jinx,” the Azam Tigers player claimed.

On Saturday, defender Rafik Halliche and substitute Djamel Mesbah scored to hand Algeria a 2-0 win and remain top of the group on nine points. Sangala attributed the result to poor form of some key players.

“The game was okay only that we didn’t have our top players in their usual good form. We could keep ball, but we did not have more options in attack. We had the chances, but we did not have clear cut chances,” he explained.

“We defended well, but we were just let down by a few things. We allowed them to score from the half-chances they created. They just made use of the few chances they had.”

Sangala will miss the reverse leg in Algeria this Wednesday through injury, but believes Malawi can spring a surprise on the road.

The loss to Algeria left Malawi still third on three points from three games whereas Ethiopia anchor the group without a point after losing a third consecutive game 2-0 to Mali. The Eagles of Mali are second on six points.

  1. There is not a snowball’s chance in hell that Malawi can pull off a surprise win against Algeria. I predict a 5-0 win for Algeria.
