‘Take parliamentary deliberations seriously’

Newly elected members of Parliament (MPs) have been challenged to take  deliberations in Parliament seriously if they are to take the country to greater heights.

Speaking during the opening of a three-day Commonwealth Parliamentary    Association (CPA) post-election seminar in Lilongwe yesterday, acting clerk of Parliament Roosevelt Gondwe said debate in the House should reflect the interests of all Malawians.

parliament“Members of Parliament need to take the country to greater heights through the greater common good, which means taking parliamentary deliberations seriously,” siad Gondwe.

He said MPs should scrutinise content and implementation of policies and actions of government of the day to promote accountability and transparency, stressing “Malawians are looking forward to your service and to your protection within your constitutional mandate”.

CPA secretary general William Shija — whose organisation has mobilised international resource persons for the seminars — said the seminar is one of the tools used to facilitate new parliamentary programmes and unify a country after elections.

“This is intended to help the nation heal the wounds of election acrimonies and foster the national agenda from the perspective of Parliament,” said Shija.

It has been observed that the retention rate for the Malawi National Assembly is at 25 percent in each election; hence, the need for the election seminars to be held  for members of Parliament.
