1 dead, another injured in mine accident

One person died while another one was injured in an accident at Kaziwiziwi Coal Mine in Rumphi on Wednesday.

Mine manager William Phiri confirmed the incident in an interview on Thursday.

Phiri identified the deceased as Golie Wachose and the injured as Symon Msiska.

The manager said Wachose was a driller and he met his fate while on duty.

“He was operating as a driller and was extracting coal. There was a crack on the wall and a stone hit his forehead,” he said.

Phiri said the injured person, who was half-buried, was taken to Gordon Memorial Hospital at Livingstonia.

He said the injured is responding well to medication.

Phiri also assured people of the mine’s safety, saying the death and injury were purely an accident.

“We have been running this mine for some time. We have poles that support the roof of the mine as well as other safety measures. But this was an accident,” he said.

Rumphi Police spokesperson Victor Khamisi said his office had no details and would investigate the matter.
