12 Chiradzulu accident victims still in hospital

The accident vehicle was badly damaged

Twelve people that sustained injuries in a road accident on Tuesday are still being treated at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).

The accident, which claimed four lives, occurred at Malika Village near Chisombezi Bridge in Chiradzulu.

Yesterday some senior government officials presided over the dispatch of the remains of the four people who died as they were on their way to attend the John Chilembwe Day memorial ceremony at Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) headquarters at Mbombwe in Chiradzulu.

QECH administrator Themba Mhango in an interview yesterday said out of 14 patients that were admitted to the hospital, 2 were discharged.

He said: “As of today (Tuesday) morning we had discharged two patients out the 14, but the rest are still being treated as mostly they have head injuries and broken limbs.”

Southern Region Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani said yesterday the accident was caused by excessive speed.

He said: “So far what we have established is that the driver, who died on the spot was over speeding which made him fail to negotiate a corner resulting into the accident.”

On Tuesday, police said the 3-tonner truck which was carrying church members from a PIM outstation at Lujeri in Mulanje, had about 45 people on board at the time of the accident.

President Peter Mutharika, during the memorial service, pledged his government’s support to the accident victims.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Henry Mussa yesterday said: “Government has provided coffins, food and transport for the funerals of those that died. Government also sent senior representatives to the funerals. The vehicle was carrying more people than it should have.”n
