2 firms repair 24 boreholes in Mchinji

Bayer Malawi Limited and Total Land Care have repaired 24 broken boreholes in Mchinji District to improve access to potable water. 

Speaking on Wednesday during the handover of the boreholes to Mchinji District Council, Bayer Malawi head of communications Anthony Maina said the gesture is part of their corporate social responsibility.

He said: “Water is life and it is a foundation of development in all spheres. As a company which works with farmers, it is our priority to ensure that they are drinking safe water.”

Maina said the K35 million borehole rehabilitation project will benefit over 20 000 people in the district.

Total Land Care country director Zwide Jere commended the communities for showing commitment during the rehabilitation project.

He said: “There are many non-functional boreholes which need attention as the situation is forcing people to drink water from unprotected sources.

“Total Land Care will continue to engage Bayer Malawi Limited to support us to reach other communities.”

Mchinji District Council director of planning and development Noel Dakamau commended the two orgainsations for the initiative.

He said: “The project has complemented one of the council’s strategic plans to provide safe water to people. I appeal to communities to take care of the boreholes.”

One of the community members, Lydia Phiri, said availability of water will help people enhance personal hygiene, especially in the wake of Covid-19.

Senior Chief Mlonyeni, whose area has benefitted from the project, said he will engage his people on how best to use the boreholes.

“Women used to travel long disatances in search of clean water, as such, I urge people not to vandalise the facilities,” he said.
