2-year-old returns with precious gifts to save others

A two-year-old girl has proved that the Kangaroo Mother Care section of Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe is a project that needs public support.

Precious Mwangupili owes her survival to the Kangaroo system—where a premature baby is strapped to its mother’s chest for warmth.

The baby-strapping is done to enable the child to benefit from its mother’s body warmth. Most premature babies who are not kept warm die.

“Precious was born in the cold month of June and while we secured a fleece blanket and a heater, we noticed that other babies in the ward were being wrapped in mere zitenje [cotton wrap-arounds]. We, therefore, decided to come back to donate some fleece blankets to needy parents.”

“Precious, her mother Monica and I have been constrained to revisit the hospital’s Kangaroo section and donate several items that will help save lives of the premature babies,” said Yvetta Mwangupili, Precious’ grandmother, herself a retired hospital nurse.

The donation, worth about K63 000, comprises fleece blankets, laundry soap and body cream. The donation was made on Sunday to coincide with the second anniversary of Precious’ birthday.

After the donation, KCH nursing officer Charles Pansipanadya commended the Mwangupili family for their kind gesture, saying the fleece blankets and the soap were key to keeping premature babies warm and hygienic.
