Cluster work to avoid bloodsucking violence—Chikwawa DC

Chikwawa District Council has asked its development partners to collaborate and work in clusters as one way of preventing alleged bloodsuckers attacks.

Chikwawa district commissioner Fred Movete made the remarks on Wednesday during an emergency stakeholders meeting aimed at addressing blood sucking issues that have not spared the district.

He said most attacks were on strangers and that it was necessary to form partnerships between non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government offices when conducting activities.

“We appreciate the existence of the NGOs in the district because they implement government efforts. But they should collaborate with government offices in doing their work,” said Movete.

Chikwawa Police Station officer-in-charge Dave Chingwalu said officers have arrested 21 people in connection with blood sucking violence.

He said on October 20, 2017 some minibus touts at Thabwa Roadblock prevented passengers from boarding minibuses and other vehicles they claimed the owners were bloodsuckers.

Chingwalu bemoaned insufficient resources to continue with the awareness as well as patrols and has since appealed for assistance.

During the meeting, Malawi Red Cross Society  and Goal Malawi officials testified that at one point, they were on the verge of being attacked by angry communities for being suspected to be bloodsuckers. n
