Temwa feels honoured with Freshwater ambassador role

US-based Malawi women’s football sensation Temwa Chawinga says she feels honoured with her new role as Freshwater Project International (FPI) brand ambassador.

The organisation unveiled the 2023 world overall top scorer as its brand ambassador on Tuesday to use her as a tool in elevating clean water and  sanitation in the country.

Temwa: Girls should have more opportunities to thrive

“I am honoured to be part of Freshwater Project International,” said the Scorchers forward. “I am committed to using my platform to ensure that young girls have more opportunities to thrive and succeed in my home country of Malawi.”

Temwa, who leads the National Women’s Soccer League scorers’ chart with 17 goals and is a goal shy of equalling an all-time record, said she cannot wait to play her role “in such a noble cause”.

FPI executive director Heidi Rickels said they are excited to get Temwa on board.

He said: “Temwa’s incredible spirit and passion align perfectly with our mission to uplift communities through clean water and sanitation.

“We are thrilled to have her as our Freshwater brand ambassador and together we are committed to expanding our reach and creating a brighter future for Malawi.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, FPI said Temwa’s extraordinary journey from her rural village in Malawi to the world stage of women’s professional soccer mirrors the strength and resilience that they strive to foster within communities, schools and health centres.

Reads the statement: “Growing up in a small village in Malawi, Temwa understood first hand  the challenges of fetching water from distant sources, the lack of adequate sanitation  and the impact these hardships had on education and health, especially for young girls.

“These experiences shaped her into a resilient individual who pursued her dreams against all odds. Temwa’s story is not just about personal success.  it shows what every girl can achieve when they work hard and keep  moving forward.”

Freshwater further says it believes that access to clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene facilities is fundamental for healthy lives and vibrant communities.
