Police have since arrested the driver of the vehicle who has been identified as Donovan Msowoya, 22, of Mwafilaso Village, T/A Kyungu in Karonga District. He has been charged with manslaughter and will appear before court soon.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola on Thursday said Msowoya was heading to Karonga Boma from Chilumba.

He tried to overtake another vehicle at Kapeto, but lost control of his vehicle and rammed into the cyclists, who were cycling on the right hand side of the road, according to Chapola.

He said an angry mob set the vehicle on fire following the incident.

Said Chapola: “We are appealing to drivers to observe speed limits and other road signs. If people know they are embarking on a journey, it is better to start off early and drive at a reasonable speed, than starting off late, over speeding and ending up involved in accidents.”n
