Police in old Malawi’s capital, Zomba, have arrested three people on suspicion they obtained Local Development Fund (LDF) money by false pretence.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude on Tuesday identified the suspects as Rajab Namonde (51), Innocent M’makuwa (40) and Raphael Mussa (25).

“The suspects were elected to run the affairs of a community development committee for Kazembe I Village in Likangala Ward. The villagers were engaged in planting trees, public roadworks and construction of fish ponds, among others,” he said.

Nyaude said the suspects allegedly created 10 ghost workers in one of the projects.

Said Nyaude: “During payment, other people came to sign for the 10 ghost workers an amount of K3 100 which they later handed over to the suspects.”
