Four convicts escaped from lawful custody at Montfort Police Unit in the southern Malawi district of Chiradzulu, three days after their conviction and sentencing.

National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo confirmed the escape on Wednesday but could not provide the identities of the convicts and circumstances of their escape.

But a source claimed the four were convicted on Monday in Chiradzulu, but for unexplained reason, the police failed to ferry them to Chichiri Prison where they would have been serving their four year sentences.

Until their escape, the four were kept at the police unit.

They were convicted for various offences of burglary.
