4 Flames stars in relegation scare

Four Malawi national football team (Flames) key players who play in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) face the harsh prospect of playing in the lower National First Division (NFD) next season as their clubs are in the murky waters of relegation.

The four are captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda, his Santos teammate Tawonga Chimodzi and Black Leopards duo of Dave Banda and Harry Nyirenda.

On Wednesday night, Santos lost 1-0 to Free State Stars and Mponda admitted that their quest for automatic survival is now beyond the realms of possibility.

Santos are second from the bottom with 23 points from 28 games. They only have two games against Amazulu and fellow strugglers Jomo Cosmos before they wrap up the season.

On the other hand, Leopards are just a step above Santos with 24 points, but have four games before they finish the season.

“We are doomed. And if we fail to win the last two games then we might be automatically relegated because there is not guarantee that Cosmos will lose all their games.

“Unless a miracle happens, we are bound to play in the relegation play-offs and that looks absolutely certain because we have terribly lost our way. The confidence is gone,” said Mponda.
