67 000 registers for by-elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says 67 564 voters have registered to vote in the by-elections scheduled to take place on December 22 2015.

MEC will hold the by-elections in Zomba Chisi Constituency, Ngala Ward in Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency and Mtope Ward in Mchinji West Constituency.

According to a statement from MEC, 15 330 people have registered in Ngala Ward, 26 433 people in Mtope Ward and 25 801 in Zomba Chisi Constituency.

Six candidates—five males and one female—are contesting in Zomba Chisi Constituency whereas two each are contesting in Ngala Ward and Mtope Ward.

Earlier, MEC said the official campaign period for the by-elections commenced on December 2 and will end on December 20 at 6am. n
