Police in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, are scampering to re-arrest eight suspects who escaped from Kabula Police Unit on the Thursday night.

The eight suspects are on record to have broken part of a police cell in which they were locked up while awaiting trial on their various criminal charges this month.

Detective sub-inspector Mtali of Kabula Police Unit confirmed the development in an interview on Friday.

“The suspects had bricks in their hands and threatened to stone to death police officers before finally running away,” Mtali said.

He said efforts to overpower such suspects proved futile as the police officers on duty were out-numbered.

“We reported the issue to Blantyre Police Station; hence, the investigations,” he said.

Particulars of the suspects at large were not immediately available. Three years ago two of three robbery suspects escaped from the same cell in similar fashion.
