9 students to study at India’s top university

The Indian High Commission in Malawi has awarded scholarships to nine Malawian students to pursue degree programmes at India’s top-notch Pune University from next month.

The students, whose courses include arts, commerce, science and business management, have been given the opportunity to study under the Africa Scholarship Scheme of the Government of India.

graduationUnder the scheme, every selected student is provided with a free return air-ticket, a monthly stipend, a monthly rent allowance or hostel facilities and an annual contingent grant.

Pune is one of the top universities in India and is dubbed ‘the Oxford of the East’, a reference to the world-famous Oxford University in London, United Kingdom.

In an interview recently, Indian High Commissioner to Malawi Vanlalhuma said although India is also a developing country, his government is eager to help Malawi realise greater national development.

“India has trained more than 250 Malawians under the Indian Technical Economic Cooperation facility for short-term courses in more than 10 fields, More than 2 000 other Malawians, including parliamentarians, have received certificates and benefitted from live university-to-university lectures through video-conferencing, under the Government of India’s Pan-African e-network project set up at Chancellor College in Zomba,” he said.
