Caps in February 13 for Zambezi Challenge

Zimbabwe Premier League side Caps United are expected in the country on February 13 2014, two days ahead of the two-day inaugural K10 million Zambezi Challenge Cup at Civo Stadium, organisers have said.

Topsports operations manager Kevin Moyo said they had previously wanted all four participating teams in Lilongwe by February 14, “but Caps requested that they should arrive on February 13 so that they should rest before participating in the tournament.”

Caps, who are likely to bring their Malawian import Gerald Phiri Junior, will be the only foreign participant in the tournament after Mozambican league champions Liga Muculmana chickened out due to other engagements.

The rest of the three home teams will earn their place in the Zambezi cup if they amass enough votes through text messages. Meanwhile, Big Bullets still lead the votes, according to Moyo.

“Bullets are followed by Silver Strikers, then Mighty Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks. But it’s a close contest among Wanderers, Silver and KB and voting closes by the end of business on Thursday,” Moyo said about the event whose champions will pocket K3 million (about $7 500).
