Escom migrates to Split Prepaid Metering
Escom has announced migration from Conventional Prepaid Metering (CPM) and Prepaid Metering (PM) to Split-Prepaid Metering (SPM), in an effort to protect its revenue and also provide quality services to consumers.
The migration progress has already started across the country and on Wednesday senior Escom officials conducted a media tour at Malawi Police Service, headquarters in Lilongwe, to update the press on the new metering system.
With the new system, the Measurement Control Unit (MCU) is installed in the electric pole, instead of inside a consumer’s house while the Customer Interface Unit (CIU) is installed inside the consumer’s house.
“This new system means there will be no tampering with the meter. It also means the possibility of meter theft is minimised as the MCU is placed at the top of the electric pole. What this means is, Escom will be able to retain its revenue,” said Ngwile Mwenifumbo, Escom regional manager for the center.
Tampering and manipulation of meters has been contributing to 20 percent of the loss in revenue for Escom translating into millions according to Mwenifumbo.
Mwenifumbo said by the year 2017, Escom will have completed migrating all of its 270 000 customers.
