Mutharika leaves for US Friday

Malawi President Peter Mutharika will travel outside the country for the first time since his election in May as he leaves for US-African Leaders Summit on Friday.

Mutharika will visit the US at the invitation of US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, the State House has announced.

“The Summit which will be attended by several other African Heads of State and government will focus on the theme ‘Investing in the Next Generation” and how the leaders can together sustain Africa’s transformation,” the State House announced today in a statement.

The statement further said the US-African Leaders’ Summit is scheduled for August 4-6, 2014 in Washington D.C.

“The plane carrying the State President will leave Kamuzu International Airport at around 16:00 hours,” the statement reads.

During the summit Mutharika will among other things participate in a number of signature events which include; Resilience and Food Security in a Changing Climate and the US-Africa Business Forum.
