People’s Party (PP) founding member Stephen Mwenye has resigned following leadership wrangles which have emerged during the 12-month absence of president Joyce Banda.

Mwenye was the party’s publicity secretary until 2014 when he lost the position at the party’s convention ahead of the May elections.

In his resignation letter addressed to PP secretary general Ibrahim Matola, which The Nation has seen, Mwenye says he is disheartened by the lack of unity which has engulfed the party since last year.

“A party that was once composed of comrades, united in the struggle for peace, unity and development, has been turned into a party at war with itself, bitter accusations and disrespect amongst its leaders,” he said.

Further, Mwenye claimed that executive decisions were being made by a few individuals and the atmosphere had become “horrible and toxic”.

He said: “This is not the party that I was involved in creating. Nor is it a party that I want to continue to participate in. I am leaving with no regrets or bitterness towards anyone. I value the many good friends I have made in the PP over the years–on both sides of the current divide.”

However, Matola said he was not aware of Mwenye’s resignation and said he needed to speak to Mwenye before responding to the allegations.
