Sierra Leone, Niger to support agro value addition
Sierra Leone and Niger envoys have expressed their countries’ willingness to support Malawi’s agriculture sector by promoting value addition.
The envoys said this yesterday after presenting their letters of credence to President Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
Sierra Leone High Commissioner Osman Keh Kamara, who was the first to present his papers, said Malawi and Sierra Leone share a common interest in agriculture and it would be good for the growth of the farming industry of both countries.
He said: “We may have differences in the staple food as ours is rice and Malawi’s being maize, but we all depend on agriculture. So, working together in strengthening each other’s agriculture sector would be the best thing to do.”
Kamara said Malawi and Sierra Leone share a similar background where they both belong to the Commonwealth, African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
On her part, Niger Ambassador Rakiatou Mayaki said her country has pledged to offer expertise in the agriculture sector, especially in poultry farming.
She said apart from agriculture, they will also invest in resource minerals as both countries have uranium and copper.
Kamara will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while Mayaki will be operating from Pretoria, South Africa.
Envoys from France, Belgium and Israel, among other countries, are also expected to present their letters of credence to the President this week. n
