Farmers complete irrigation farming course
Farmers from Mkolimbo Village in Senior Chief Kwataine in Ntcheu District have a reason to smile after acquiring knowledge and technical skills in vegetable irrigation farming.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony of farmers who underwent training in irrigation farming at Mphate Irrigation Scheme on Friday, Grace Mtema, officer-in-charge for Africare—organisers of the training, said irrigation farming can be a major tool of improving food security and fighting poverty in the country.
“The aim of this programme is to assist people in Ntcheu to develop themselves through farming because it is the major source of livelihood. So, we want them to be growing vegetables and other crops throughout the year instead of relying on rain-fed farming as the country continues to receive low rainfall,” said Mtema.
Senior Chief Kwataine asked the graduates to work as a team in managing the scheme for the facility to serve them long.
He asked Africare and Ntcheu District Council to construct a market at Ntcheu Boma so that farmers do not travel long distances to sell their produce. n
