Police summoned Gwanda’s ‘2nd wife’ during funeral
Grace Mhango, second wife to fallen veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba, has complained that she was treated badly as she was called to police as Chakuamba lay in state.
M h a n g o, who called a news conference at her Manja residence in Blantyre yesterday, just a day after the burial of her husband, said some people wanted her locked up when Chakuamba’s body was lying in state at Comesa Hall.
Mhango, 36, said soon after she viewed the body of her husband at Comesa on Thursday a police officer asked her to go with him to Southern Region Police Headquarters.
She said she met senior officers and after explaining her story, they advised her to return to Comesa Hall, adding that she was assured police would provide protection in Blantyre and Nsanje, where her 82-year-old husband was to be buried. She, however, claimed she was stopped from laying a wreath.
Disagreements have emerged Southern Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Ramsey Mushane confirmed Mhango was asked to report at the police, but said they were simply discussing some issues regarding the funeral.
Asked why she called journalists just a day after the burial of her husband she claimed she loved, Mhango said the treatment she received was so bad and she wanted Malawians to understand who she was to Chakuamba.
“Chakuamba proposed to me in 1999 when he came in the Northern Region for political campaigns. I knew him because of late Chakufwa Chihana who was keeping me. “
He kept coming to Mzuzu for political meetings and kept on making his advances to me and I finally accepted. That was the beginning of our relationship,” Mhango claimed.
She said she and Chakuamba loved each other, adding he Gwanda’s second wife’ summoned to police PAGE 3 arranged to take her to Blantyre in 2001 and that it was made open that she was his second wife.
“Our relationship continued until I got pregnant for him, but unfortunately, I miscarried at three months. In the process, he gave me a job as his personal assistant,” she said.
Mhango claimed s o m e people never wanted to see her at the funeral, yet she had looked after him throughout his illness.
Yesterday Chakuamba’s first wife, Raima Fatch, asked to comment on Mhango’s claims in an interview yesterday, said it was not easy for both of them. “
She [Mhango] is mourning and we are mourning. She may say all that because of the situation she is in. So, it’s difficult for us to comment on this.” Fatch said.
