Zomba learners undergo eye-screening process
Schools and nutrition officer for Zomba Urban James Kumbani says learning under direct sunlight due to shortage of classroom blocks is contributing to sight problems among some learners in Zomba.
He said this at Mponda Primary School in the city on Monday when Zomba Lions Club observed Sight Day.
“We have primary schools like Chikamveka, Chipiloni and Ndangopuma which have high enrolment of pupils. This makes some to learn outside classrooms where there is direct sunlight. So, reading books under sunlight can have some side effects to the eyes,” he said.
He commended Zomba Lions Club for bringing eye experts from Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) to eye-screen the learners.
Lions Club president George Phiri said it is his organisation’s responsibility to reach out to many people with eye problems.
The school’s special needs teacher Samuel Ganiza said some learners have sight problems and the eye-screening process will help to ease the situation. n
