Beam rescues destitute siblings
Seventeen-year-old Gift Mkandawire and his 15-year-old sister Jessica Banda have been rescued from a life of hardships by Beautify Malawi Trust (Beam).
The organisation has given the two siblings bus fare to go back home in Rumphi from Lilongwe where they were stranded for over three months.
The two, who lost their mother in 2006, came to the capital city early November last year to look for an uncle who sent them away, saying he was not their relation.
Since that time, they moved from one point to another because the uncle was the only person they knew in town.
Since the two could not find bus fare to return to Rumphi, they rented a house in Chinsapo. They were supposed to be paying K4 000 per month for the house, but after noticing their predicament, the landlord reduced the rental to K3 000.
Gift did casual work which helped him earn K1 000 per day on a good day.
In response to their plea, Beam at the weekend presented bus fares for the two from Lilongwe to Rumphi.
The organisation also gave the two assorted items and assured them that they will go back to their old school of Ng’onga Community Day Secondary School where Gift was in Form Two while Jessica was in Form Three.
Beam board chairperson Mayamiko Mwnjiro said the trust was moved by the siblings’ desire to go back to school. n
