Fedoma launches project to defend rights of the disabled
Through the project called Disability Rights Unit in Malawi (Drum), Fedoma will receive, investigate and resolve cases of violations.
Briefing the media in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, Fedoma executive director Mussa Chiwaula said they have engaged lawyers to help in seeking justice for the disabled.
“Most of the disability persons are poor and they suffer in silence. So, with the project, we will be referring strategic cases to lawyers for litigation in the court of law.
“We expect improved respect of rights of persons with disabilities and full participation in various issues in our society,†he said.
Fedoma public relations officer Pamela Juma said the project will also encourage the disabled to report violation cases.
Drum is a five-year project funded by the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa (Osisa).
